FRAXEL®
Fraxel® is a laser treatment that targets damaged skin by penetrating the skin's outermost layer (epidermis) and triggering the body's own natural production of new collagen and skin cells. The results include improved skin texture, tone and pore size.
When it comes to lasers, it's not just about the skin that comes in contact with the laser, but also the areas of skin that the Fraxel® treatment doesn't contact. Because the treatment is so precise, the laser columns target only a fraction of skin at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This "fractional" treatment allows your body to heal the skin much faster than if the entire area were treated all at once. How fast? Your body's natural skin renewal process is about 28 days. Fraxel® laser treatment does it in two days.
Fraxel® Treatment Preparation:
- Please try to arrive at the office with no makeup.
- Please bring something to hold your hair back from your face, (i.e.: headband or ponytail holder) as we apply a blue tint to the treatment area to enhance the lasers results.
- Two weeks prior to treatment discontinue the use of any topical prescription creams, products containing alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acids and retinoids.
- If you have a history or are prone to fever blisters or cold sores on the lips, we will prescribe Valtrex to take as directed prior to your appointment. (If you are unsure about any products you are currently using we would be happy to help you.)
- Patients undergoing Accutane treatment should be off of Accutane for six months prior to Fraxel® treatments.
- We suggest you purchase an over the counter moisturizer (i.e. Cetaphil cream or Aloe Vera gel) to soothe your skin after your treatment.
Fraxel® Post Treatment Care
- You may notice some redness or swelling on the treatment areas. These are normal skin responses to treatment and usually go away in 2-3 days, although sometimes this may take up to one to two weeks. You can apply a cold compress for comfort.
- Minor peeling or flaking may occur 2-5 days after treatment. Applying moisturizers frequently will help minimize dryness and flaking.
- Ice packs may be used immediately after treatment to help reduce swelling.
- Skin on treatment area may also feel warm to touch for a few days after the treatment.
- We suggest using an over the counter moisturizer (i.e. Cetaphil Cream or Aloe Vera Gel) to soothe the skin after treatments.
- Using a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil when cleansing the skin for the next week is advisable.
- Avoid exposure to sunlight. It is always very important to wear a hat or protective clothing over the treated area.
- Please use sunscreen daily to help minimize damage to the healing skin. In addition to sunscreen, you should also use moisturizer twice daily on the treated area. You may consult with our skin care specialist for product suggestions.
- Sleep with head elevated. If swelling occurs use over the counter Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin)
